Puerto Vallarta, previously known as Las Peñas, Peñitas and probably many years ago El Carrizal, It was funded in the independent period, the 12th of December of 1851, by Guadalupe Sánchez Torres, his wife Ambrosia Carrillo and some friends like Cenobio Joya, Apolonio de Robles, Cleofas Peña and Martín Andrade among others who gave the name of Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe, commemorated to the virgin. The 31st of May 1918, Las Peñas comisary was elevated to the category of municipality ordered by H. Congress of the State. When the political category of the comisary Las Peñas was changed, at the same moment the name was changed to Puerto Vallarta municipality, in honor of Lic. Ignacio L. Vallarta, considerable law specialist and ex governor of State.

Puerto Vallarta is a city full of many colors and contrasts between the jungle of Sierra Madre Occidental and the urbe of Valle de Banderas as was named by the first Spanish colonists, guided by the captain Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura who was the conqueror of this región. Actually it stays with the same name “Valle de Banderas” and “Bahía de Banderas” because when the Spanish arrived at the town of Tintoque more than twenty thousand armed Indians where wainting for them at the very entrance of the town with a flag of wings in their hand and another in their rifle. This is why this beautiful bay still has the name of Banderas bay.

The lieutenant Lazaro Blanco says in their relation of Compostela, written memo in 1584, that the naturals named this valley “Xihutla” which means “place where the herbs grow” this is why a folkloric group has this name, in honor of the first residents of this región.

In their beginning, las Peñas, as it was known, was a port where the salt that was transportated, this salt was used to refine the silver from the mines of the towns of Cuale, Mascota and San Sebastian del oeste, but when the same mining deposits where found in the United States, the minery industry of the region was over. Since this industry was a new way that the people in the área could work, they had to return to the agriculture and fishing industry.

This place in Mexico is as well known for their big movie productions, all of them have chosen Puerto Vallarta because of the film that was made in 1964 at the beach of Mismaloya named “The night of the iguana” written by Tennessee Williams and directed by John Huston, with the performance of Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr Ava Gardner.

Adorning with her beauty and accompanied to Richard Burton came her sentimental partner Elizabeth Taylor, which call the attetion of the media because of her beauty and the beauty of this Port, suddenly there where many notes about this place which made it famous to the world.

As well there had been many visits of politics such as the meeting made by the presidents Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and Richard Nixon on thursday 20th of August 1970, this reunión was done to arrange agreements between Mexico and the United States, to solve the problem of Chamizal, but more important in this visit there where many important constructions which where inaugurated that gave maritime, road, and aerial access to this turistic town to the rest of the country and world.

The 20th of February of 1983, Puerto Vallarta receives queen Isabela from England, in her visit she established bonds of cooperation and friendship, from the 17 to the 22 of February she made a tour from Acapulco all the way to La Paz, Baja California. She was assited by the Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado; in Jalisco by the governor Flavio Romero de Velasco and the Municipal President, Arq. Jorge Leobardo Lepe García.

Thanks to this events and the warmth from the people, the population of Puerto Vallarta has grown more and more as the years pass, from being a small town that arise from the need to transport salt to the mines, now is a city habitated with more than 200 thousand residents, every year it receives more tan 1.5 million visitants that arrive by land, air and sea, and that are hosted in more than 290 hotels with more tan 4 thousand bedrooms with which the hotels count.

Actually in the city there are many cultural, gastronomic, sport and medical activities between many others, we invite you to come and get to know them in this small place in Mexico which by much is one of the best in the world!

As far as princess crusie lines pulling out of vallarta .I think it's because the main boardwalk, called the Malecon, is under construction. This downtown area is the heart of vallarta. When a tourist visits it's one of the first places they go. There are so many other amazing things to do there but if it's your first time you may not get exposed to them. Especially when you have a limited time at the port. All I can say is that when the construction is finished it will be even better. Also, in the summer it's alot hotter and rains often. The beach is experiencing run off from the rivers so the ocean is not quite so inviting.I love vallarta and I never have any problems there.
